LSU Game Design Program Ranked Top 25 in the Nation

BATON ROUGE, LA – In the seventh annual Game Design School Rankings by Animation Career Review, LSU’s program numbered among the very best across a variety of categories.

Out of 144 schools considered, the LSU College of Engineering’s Digital Media Arts & Engineering program was ranked:

  • No. 1 in Louisiana
  • No. 9 in the South
  • No. 21 nationally among schools offering a Master of Science or Master of Arts in Game Design
  • No. 22 nationally among public schools and colleges
  • No. 46 nationally among all programs

Rankings are based on academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program, value as it relates to tuition and indebtedness, geographic location, and for the first time in 2019, employment data.

“Modern video game methodology is a conglomeration of previous mediums of film, television, writing and board game design mixed in a real-time interactive STEAM environment," said Marc Aubanel, director of DMAE. "Game development is spreading far beyond entertainment and affecting sports, research, and training, to name just a few, in significant ways.”

Game Design at LSU

The LSU College of Engineering houses the Digital Media Arts & Engineering program (also housed in LSU's Center for Computation and Technology) and the Division of Computer Science in Engineering. The DMAE program offers a 22-month master’s in digital media arts & engineering and minors in DMAE technology and digital media arts & engineering in art. The DMAET minor is a collaborative endeavor with seven campus units at LSU, including the School of Art, Division of Computer Science and Engineering, Division of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Department of English, Manship School of Mass Communication, and the School of Music. This interdisciplinary program helps students develop the skills needed to seek careers in the video game development, film, animation, web development and digital media industries.

The Division of Computer Science offers BS, MS, and PhD programs in computer science. A computer science minor is also available. Computer science students have the opportunity to take a number of game-related electives, including Video Game Design, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Interface Design and Technology, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Digital Media Programming, Interactive Computer Graphics, Graphical and Geometric Modeling, and Scientific Information Visualization.
