SECOL 89 - Home

March 31 to April 2, 2022

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 89th annual Southeastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL LXXXIX) hosted virtually by Louisiana State University. 

The theme of our 2022 meeting is “Diversity and Inclusion in Linguistics,” and in this spirit, we welcome papers from all subdisciplines and scholarly paths.

The Program of the SECOL 89 meeting is accessible in full here (secol.org). The conference schedule is accessible here. It features:

  • 23 sessions on different topics and 4 special panels on Spanish linguistics,
  • 79 individual talks by researchers from the southeastern region of the U.S., other states (Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, New Mexico, New York, Utah) and countries (Canada, Taiwan),
  • two documentary screenings including Q&As with producers (The Language and Life Project, North Carolina State University),
  • a plenary address by Prof. Tracey L. Weldon (University of South Carolina), offering an autoethnographic account of middle-class African American English in the Southern United States and "the language of double consciousness."

We hope that this opportunity to share your research with colleagues virtually is a rewarding experience!

LSU Hosts and SECOL 89 Organizers

While many of us are best inspired by face-to-face professional interactions, the Executive Board of SECOL has decided, after serious deliberations, that spring 2022 may not be the right time to do so yet. We will embrace a virtual meeting once again, focusing on opportunities for diversification and inclusion that such a meeting can provide. A virtual meeting can draw participants that may hesitate to join in other times, it does not have limitations of travel funding, the plenary address will be open to public, and close captioning for conference talks is been considered. We are excited for research and professional development opportunities that this meeting might hold!!

SECOL, founded in 1969, is the oldest regional linguistic association in the United States, and is dedicated to the advancement of the study of language, in research, teaching, and public initiatives. Annual spring meetings of the association provide a venue for scholars at different stages of their careers and projects to present and discuss their work. SECOL also publishes peer-reviewed articles and book reviews in The Southeastern Journal of Linguistics.
