LSU Spring Commencement 2018

At the spring commencement ceremony, a total of 3,967 degrees were awarded – the third largest amount of degrees awarded in the spring. The overall class of 2017-18 – students receiving degrees in previous summer and fall commencements combined with the current spring commencement – saw 6,497 degrees awarded, the second most ever awarded in an academic year.The Department of Geology & Geophysics would like to congratulate the following students for completing their degrees:

Congratulations to #LSUGnG Chair and and Frank W. and Patricia Harrison Family Professor Dr. Carol Wicks for receiving the George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award at this year's Geological Society of America 2017 Annual Meeting!
The Hydrogeology Division's George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award, first presented in 1984, honors noted American hydrogeologist George Burke Maxey. An esteemed mentor and pioneering researcher, Maxey's career spanned more than 35 years and helped establish hydrogeology as the discipline we know today. Presented annually, the award recognizes exemplary service "to the hydrogeology profession and to the Hydrogeology Division."

Congratulations to #LSUGnG grad students Adam Gostic and Abah Omale for being selected as 2017 Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies grant recipients! Adam Gostic received a $2,000 award for his research proposal "Patterns in Fine Grained Sediments Deposition of the False River Point Bar of the Lower Mississippi River Valley." Abah Omale was awarded $500 for his proposal "Fault Reactivation: An Indicator of Changing Lithospheric Strength Alonga Passive Continental Margin the U.S. Gulf of Mexico." Congratulations Abah and Adam!

Congratulations to PSL PhD student Don Hood for being granted an $8,000 graduate student research assistantship (GSRA) from the Louisiana Space Consortium! Don was awarded the GSRA for his contribution to "Examining Periglacial Boulder Clustering with MBARS" which he proposed under the guidance of Dr. Suniti Karunatillake. This further strengthens the $35k LaSpace research enhancement award (REA) to PSL on "Discerning the mechanisms of global weathering from boulder fields on Mars," which will help to establish a collaboration with Dr. Caleb Fassett at NASA-Marshall, Huntsville, AL. Congratulations Don!
