The Department of Curriculum and Instruction within LSU's College of Human Sciences and Education offers four graduate programs: Master of Education (MEd), Master of Arts (MA), Certificate of Education Specialist (EdS), and PhD. Admission to all programs is contingent upon  Graduate School and departmental requirements. 

The Structure of the MA and PhD programs supports interdisciplinary and individual study for practitioners and researchers. Specializations include art, English, foreign language, science, mathematics, and social studies education, as well as curriculum theory, early childhood and middle school education, gifted and talented education, reading and literacy, social education, special education, and teacher education. Minimum requirements for the MA include 36 semester hours of course work.

Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction

The MA in education with a specialization in curriculum studies draws upon education and learning principles to prepare students to become leaders, scholars, and agents of change in educational, community and human service settings.  This specialization serves students in a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds who are pursuing a wide range of goals: PhD admission and furthering their professional development in a variety of educational fields including social foundations, museum education, nursing education, community activism and policy studies.

Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum & Instruction

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum & Instruction: Curriculum Theory consists of a minimum of 90 credit hours beyond the Bachelors.  A minimum of 12 hours must be taken outside the School of Education.  Students must pass a general exam (written & oral), a dissertation proposal, write a dissertation, and pass an oral dissertation defense.

Special Course Offerings

Each semester, the Curriculum Theory Project offers special topics courses and curates courses of related interests that delve into aspects of curriculum theory such as communication, adaptive systems, philosophy history, and more.
