The History of Film and Media Arts/Screen Arts at LSU: A Timeline  

1995-96: The Audio Visual Arts Minor is approved by the Louisiana State University Faculty Senate on January 17, 1996.  

2004: Fourteen production modules are funded by the Film and Media Arts Tech Fee Grant.  

2005: The Program in Film and Media Arts replaces Audio Visual Arts following approval by the Faculty Senate Courses and Curriculum Committee.  

2006: Studio 151 is created through the FMA/CxC Studio BoR Grant. Studio 151 now provides student and faculty resources including a professional audio recording sound booth; multimedia conference/presentation practice room; mini-DV camcorders, tripods, HD flip cameras, and other AV equipment available for check-out; assistance with creating videos, presentations, websites, and podcasts; open-access computer workstations for video/audio editing, web design, and graphic design; and HD theatre-style film screening capabilities.  

Spring 2011: Film and Media Arts BA in Liberal Arts is approved by the Louisiana State University Faculty Senate Courses & Curricula Committee.  

Fall 2012: The first Film and Media Arts BA in Liberal Arts students are awarded degrees at Louisiana State University’s Winter Commencement.  

Spring 2013: New FMA courses added to curriculum

  • FMA 3010, Art of Cinematography
  • FMA 3011, Art of Editing
  • FMA 3501, Russian Film
  • FMA/Louisiana Public Broadcasting and FMA/Manship Theatre Internship Programs instituted

Fall 2013: New FMA courses added to curriculum

  • FMA 3502, Italian Film
  • FMA 3503, Asian Film

Fall 2015: New FMA courses added to curriculum

  • FMA 7001, Graduate Seminar in Film & Media Arts added to curriculum
  • FMA 7900, Independent Study in Film & Media Arts added to curriculum

Renowned filmmaker and documentarian Glen Pitre, Cote Blanche Productions, becomes a full-time Professional-in-Residence on FMA Faculty

Spring 2016: FMA Graduate Minor added to curriculum

Fall 2016: New FMA courses added to curriculum

  • FMA 3504, Latin-American Cinema
  • FMA 3505, The Horror Film

Spring 2017: FMA bylaws approved; New FMA course added to curriculum

  • FMA 3030, Internship

Fall 2017: FMA Program change to HSS Program in Screen Arts

  • LSU Board of Supervisors approve

Spring 2018: Louisiana Board of Regents approve Screen Arts Bachelor of Arts degree

  • Screen Arts Bachelor of Arts degree concentrations to be offered Fall 2018
  • Three concentrations: Writing, Production, and History/Theory/Criticism
  • Five courses added to FMA/SCRN curriculum
    • FMA/SCRN 3012,  Film Directing
    • FMA/SCRN 3014,  Film Producing
    • FMA/SCRN 4014,  Advanced Film Producing
    • FMA/SCRN 4012,  Advanced Film Directing
    • FMA/SCRN 4015,  Advanced Film Practices

Fall 2018: Screen Arts moved into the newly renovated Allen 136.
