What is Artificial Intelligence?

LSU's Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (BS in AI) is Louisiana's first undergraduate artificial intelligence degree and is designed for students who want deep technical expertise in AI, machine learning, deep learning, large language models, computer vision, autonomous systems, and responsible AI. Housed in the LSU College of Engineering and the Division of Computer Science and Engineering, the AI major combines rigorous foundations in computer science, algorithms, calculus, linear algebra, probability, and mathematical reasoning with hands-on, project-based learning. Students learn the full AI stack, from data pipelines and model training to evaluation, security, human-AI interaction, and deployment, preparing them to build AI systems that are accurate, efficient, reliable, safe, and ethical. The program launched in Fall 2026 at LSU's Baton Rouge campus and includes undergraduate research, internships, industry collaboration, and a senior AI capstone focused on solving real-world problems.

Built to create AI engineers, not just AI users The curriculum was designed from first principles to teach students how to design, analyze, train, evaluate, secure, and deploy modern AI systems. LSU created 20 new courses for the degree.
Full Stack AI Curriculum Students study machine learning, applied deep learning, computer vision, agentic LLM systems, reinforcement learning, sequence models, human-AI interaction, AI security, ethics in AI, efficient neural networks, neuromorphic computing, and autonomous systems.
Industry-Connected Learning Students can pursue internships and undergraduate research and complete a senior AI capstone. LSU's existing AI project ecosystem has connected students with Louisiana partners to solve real business challenges.
Postgrad Opportunities Students from LSU's LLM Application Development course have gone on to opportunities with companies including Google, Microsoft, SpaceX, Oracle, Amazon, and Epic Systems, while LSU CSE supports active research in AI, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, AI security, and human-centered computing.
