CITI User Guide

LSU offers free online training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Trainings are offered in the areas of Export Controls, Human Subjects Research, and Research Security. The steps to get started—how to register and affiliate with LSU—are the same for all courses and outlined below. Once you enroll in a course and begin your training, remember you can log off and back on at any time—you do not have to complete the whole training in one sitting. It normally takes a few sessions to complete a course.

Once you affiliate with LSU, all courses required by LSU and federal agencies will be free. Please note: You must use your official LSU email address when you register with CITI for your course completions to appear in GeauxGrants.

Step 1: Go to the CITI Program website and click “Register” as a first-time user. What this looks like.

Step 2: Click “Select Your Organization Affiliation” to affiliate with LSU. What this looks like.

Step 3: Start typing “Louisiana” in the search box and select “Louisiana State University A&M - Baton Rouge” from the drop-down menu. Check the boxes below to agree and affirm, and then the blue button: “Create a CITI Program account.” What this looks like.

Step 4: Enter your first and last name and LSU email address. Provide a secondary email for potential account recovery. Your primary email must be your official LSU email address for the training you complete to be recognized in GeauxGrants. What this looks like.

Step 5: On the next screen, choose a username and password, and select and answer your preferred security question. What this looks like.

Step 6: Next, choose if you want to connect your ORCID ID, enter your country of residence, and select your contact preferences before clicking “Continue Registration.” What this looks like.

Step 7: Choose whether you would like to earn continuing education (CE) credits and then click “Submit.” (Most users will not select this option.) What this looks like.

Step 8: Next, you must affiliate with LSU. All of the fields marked by an asterisk are required. What this looks like.

Step 9: On the next screen, choose your desired curriculum. This is where users looking specifically for courses on Export Controls, Human Subjects Research, and Research Security will make different selections. Click “No” or “Not at this time” (the final option under each question) for all courses you are not interested in taking.

  • For Export Controls, select the “CITI Export Controls” course under Question 3. What this looks like.
  • For Human Subjects Research, select either “Biomedical Research Investigators” or “Social & Behavioral Research Investigators” under Question 6. This fulfills the IRB requirement for the basic/refresher human subjects research training. What this looks like.
  • For Research Security, select “Research Security Training (Combined Course)” under Question 10. What this looks like.

Step 10: Once you click “Submit,” you are enrolled and ready to start your training. Just click “View Courses” in the main menu after you log in.

After your training is complete, your completion should automatically appear in GeauxGrants, but you should also have the option of downloading a certificate. For Human Subjects Research/IRB, please attach your completion certificate to your IRB submission. (For researchers who can be listed on the Personnel page of the IRB application/amendment, the CITI training should populate below their name on the Personnel page.  If it does not, the certificate will need to be attached to the Project Abstract & Supporting materials page.)
