NPHC at LSU
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was founded May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. NPHC was chartered at LSU on February 28, 1992. It serves as the umbrella organization for the historically, but not exclusively, black Greek-lettered organizations commonly referred to as the Divine Nine.
How to Join NPHC
New Member Intake
Students interested in joining NPHC at LSU will participate in New Member Intake. In order to be eligible to participate in Intake, prospective members must attend Greek Code. At Greek Code, NPHC fraternities and sororities individually announce their membership selection/intake process each semester and explain their membership process during an informational meeting.
Greek Code Dates
NPHC Greek Code Intake Kick-off: August 25
Any student interested in NPHC Greek Life should attend the Greek Code event. This event is mandatory for all students planning to participate in the intake process. Greek Code is an amazing opportunity for students who are interested in learning more about NPHC fraternities and sororities at LSU. Greek Code will take place at least once per semester. NPHC organizations at LSU recruit members through a process called Membership Intake. NPHC fraternities and sororities will individually announce their membership selection/intake process during the semester and will explain their membership process at the initial informational meeting. NPHC organizations decide on having intake each semester and there is no guarantee that intake will take place on a regular schedule. It is highly recommended that interested students research each fraternity or sorority carefully and attend events sponsored by the respective chapters and NPHC as a whole.
Generally, the membership intake process begins with an informational meeting. At the informational meeting, interested students are invited to learn more about a specific organization and details of the application process for that organization. After the informational meetings, potential members or aspirants are asked to complete a membership application and show proof that they have achieved the organization's minimum standards for academics, community service and leadership. Following the submission of an application, interviews and selections will take place.

Basic requirements for joining any NPHC organization:
- Must be a full-time student (enrolled in at least 12 hours in fall/spring semester)
- Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (though most organizations require at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA for intake/initiation, so strive for higher)
- Have a minimum of 12-36 cumulative hours
In addition to fraternity/sorority dues and fees, a $67 assessment for Greek Membership per semester will appear on each Greek students’ LSU fee bill.
One-time expenses include new member fees, chapter dues, national dues and initiation costs. This could range from $400-$2000. Average semester costs range from $100-$300. The cost varies between chapters.
Members in the Greek Life community are expected to uphold both chapter, council and university policies in addition to Greek Life Standards & Safety. This includes payment of dues on time, maintaining the minimum grade point average, following the student code of conduct, aligning with anti-hazing practices and attending educational workshops and trainings each year.
