Safety & Support Questions

LSU is like a small community within the larger Capital City of Baton Rouge. Like any community, we are dedicated to preserving a peaceful, safe, and healthy environment for the entire university community.

The LSU Police Department operates 24 hours every day and offers a variety of resources for crime deterrence and response, including uniform patrol, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, K-9 officers, investigators, and other support services.

SAFETY TIPS

Hazing of any kind is illegal and strictly prohibited at LSU. It is a serious issue that damages the growth and well-being of our students and campus community. If you or your student witness or suspect hazing, please contact LSU PD at 225-578-3231 or submit a Hazing Report. You may also report anonymously to Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP (7867).

During times of crisis, Parent & Family Programs strives to keep families informed through social media and email updates. In emergency situations, the LSU Office of Emergency Preparedness disperses information throughout the LSU community, and Parent & Family Programs works to relay that information to families.

In the event of an emergency, the university utilizes the LSUalert System to send text message notifications to students. Notifications to parents and families are sent through the LSU Mobile App.

The first line of communication in the event of an emergency is the LSUalert System, which is available to students, faculty, and staff. Having your student subscribe to this service will ensure that all emergency communications are delivered directly to their cell phone.

Since parents and family members cannot sign up for the LSUalert System, we encourage you to download the LSU Mobile App to receive these messages. You must allow the app to send push-notifications in order to receive a copy of emergency text notifications.

LSU Cares is an initiative that is dedicated to the well-being of students and promotes a community that cares about each of its members. The LSU Office of Student Advocacy & Accountability offers an online reporting system to help students, faculty, staff, family members, and friends submit reports about themselves or others they're worried about.

Issues or behavior concerning the wellbeing of a student that are perceived to be harmful, worrisome, or threatening (to the individual student or to others) are forwarded to the C.A.R.E. Team, who will assess, consult, and respond to the concern or incident.

Issues or behavior concerning poor or struggling academic performance (e.g., excessive class absences, excessive tardiness, failing or poor grades, etc.), not academic misconduct, are forwarded to the Academic Intervention Team (AIT).

Academics Questions

FERPA, or the Family Education Rights Privacy Act, is federal legislation that gives ownership of records to the student at the college level. The easiest way for parents and families to receive information about their student’s grades is for the student to provide it. Students can look up their academic transcript via myLSU.

Students can give their parents and family access to view fee bills and/or grades through the myProxy application. When creating a myProxy account, you will be prompted to create a community LSU ID which will then allow you to request access from your student.

In addition to signing up for myProxy, you may ask your Tiger to submit a FERPA Waiver. This waiver will allow you to discuss your Tiger’s academic records with counselors.

The LSU Center for Academic Success (CAS) helps students achieve the higher levels of learning necessary for academic success in college and beyond.

CAS offers services such as tutoring, Supplemental Instruction (SI), Academic Coaching, workshops, and online resources.

Students who use the strategic academic support resources offered by CAS increase their GPAs, stay in their majors of choice, and graduate on time.

An academic coach can help your student plan a path toward academic success with effective personalized learning strategies and tips on time management. Academic Coaching is available for all courses and majors.

Housing & Dining Questions

Living with a roommate can be a new frontier for most students, so navigating boundaries and interpersonal conflict can feel uncomfortable.

If your student is having some challenges with their roommate, encourage them to escalate their concern to a professional staff member (RC) if their attempts at conflict resolution are unsuccessful.

If at anytime your student is in danger or unsafe, please contact LSU Police immediately. Hall front desks are open or have on-call phone numbers posted to contact on-call staff as needed too.

If your student wants to change rooms, they can submit a request in the housing portal

RESIDENT RESOURCES

LSU Dining is here to support your student and ensure a safe and delicious dining experience if they have food allergies or medical conditions that require specific diets.

The entire LSU Dining team is trained on Food Allergies in accordance with FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education group) standards. This helps ensure that culinarians and food service associates appropriately store and handle food, taking necessary steps to prevent cross contact.

Check out these steps to help students with food allergies and dietary restrictions navigate dining at LSU and advocate for themselves.
